Elliot Street Lunatic taps The Dear Hunter’s Casey Crescenzo to produce forthcoming album

Published by NOISE! Staff on May 15th, 2011 - in Band Features

Back in 2009, Elliot Street Lunatic opened up for nationally touring artists The Dear Hunter — a thrill in its own right. Today, stemming from that original encounter, the Lansing-based group is heading out west to record its latest album.

Elliot Street Lunatic will hook up with Casey Crescenzo, singer/songwriter for The Dear Hunter, who will help them produce a full-length with the working title “Ghost Town Lullabies”.

“We opened for them back in 2009 and we just kept in touch about doing the new ESL album when we were ready,” said Jason Marr, guitarist and vocalist for the band.”

And the band is by all means ready.

Laboring hard on songs for the album for roughly two years, Elliot Street Lunatic is ready to lay it down on recording to show everyone the strides they’ve made.

“We have grown as musicians and as a band,” said Marr, whose band makes regular rounds through West Michigan. “Our latest album (“Stories From The Void”) was more of a space rock album. This new album has some spacey-ness to it, but the songs are more polished and tighter.

Before releasing the album in what they’re aiming to be September, Elliot Street Lunatic plans on doing a little label shopping to see what kind of opportunities come around.

While some opt to jump out to the West Coast to record just to say they did, it’s crucial to the band that they hook up with a fellow musician they respect and utilize resources not available here at home.

“With a producer on board who is eager to work on our album, more ideas that we may not have thought of will be brought to the table and we should be able to collectively come out with some great tunes,” Marr pointed out.

The band raised money for the album via kickstarter.com and achieved the goal of $1,000 with tons of time to spare. They’re raising additional funds for expenses they’ll incur along the way.

Emo rock pioneers My Chemical Romance will help celebrate Record Store Day on April 16 with a meet-and-greet at Vertigo Music in Grand Rapids

Vinyl-philes (and music buffs in general), it’s your day to stroll on down to your neighborhood record store and splurge. Record Store Day is among us, and there are plenty of shops to hit and plenty of festivities to partake in.

Vertigo Music in Grand Rapids is pulling out all the stops with a meet-and-greet with national touring artist My Chemical Romance, which is in town for its sold out performance at The Orbit Room. Vertigo will also see performances from local bands like Shores, The Blue Squares, The Boss Mustangs and way more.

The Peoples’ Temple will be rocking an acoustic performance at Lansing’s Flat Black and Circular while the other merchants are offering plenty of discounts and specials. Pick up some vinyl, spin it backwards and then do whatever the devil tells you to — which will probably be: Go to the NOISE! Convention.

The Scene Aesthetic coming to Grand Rapids on Feb. 19

Published by NOISE! Staff on January 13th, 2011 - in Concert Calendar

The Scene Aesthetic

The Scene Aesthetic is Eric Bowley and Andrew de Torres, an acoustic indie/pop duo from Seattle, Washington. Their infectious brand of pop has gained them a rather rabid following throughout the country over the past few years. Their last West Michigan appearance was in Lansing in Sept. 2009, where they sold out (and then some) Mac’s Bar.

They embark on their winter headlining tour, visiting Grand Rapids at MXTP on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011. In tow are three of pop music’s up-and-comers in He is We, Carter Hulsey, and Plug in Stereo. All ages are welcome, tickets are $10.00, and doors open at 630pm. Tickets will be available starting this Saturday at 10am, at FusionShows.com, and will also be available in person at Vertigo Music in downtown Grand Rapids.

I was as shocked as the next person to discover that there are quality concerts happening outside of this West Michigan bubble.

Case in point: Texas indie rockers Eisley.

Eisley kicked off their seven-week “Over the River and Through the Wood” tour Oct. 9 in Louisiana. The Texas quintet hits the road in support of their upcoming third album following their split with longtime label Warner/Reprise. Ives The Band and Christie Dupree will open on the tour.

Fusion Shows will partner with Michigan State University’s Residence Hall Association (RHA) for the show. They combine forces to present Eisley at the Union Ballroom on the campus on Friday, October 29.  Student tickets are $5, and available exclusively at Flat, Black, and Circular in downtown East Lansing (limit 2 per valid student ID).  Public tickets are $10 in advance, and available only online at FusionShows.com.  All ages are welcome, and doors will open at 7 p.m.

Listen to or download Eisley’s “The Valley” here.

The Hex Bombs: Throwing down since 2006

Published by NOISE! Staff on February 20th, 2010 - in Band Features

Local bands, take notice. Nathan Garman, rhythm guitarist for infamous Kalamazoo punk rockers The Hex Bombs is about to drop his secret for longevity.

“Passion, pride and a whole lot of booze,” he stated.

Buy it or not, that magic equation has kept The Bombs intact and rocking hard since 2006. Four years is not an eternity, but considering most local bands have the shelf life of a year or so, the feat is pretty legit.

“A single mind, goal and vision,” said Hex Bombs vocalist Mike Mann, further exploring what has kept the group together amid a handful of shake-ups to its personnel. “We keep the band a well-oiled war machine. Plus, these guys are my best friends.”

Line-up changes are generally the first sign of demise for local bands – but not for The Bombs. Not only has the band cycled through three bass players, two drummers and two lead guitarists, but they stayed active, displaying their classic punk sound at seemingly every opportunity.

Currently, the Hex Bombs are comprised of Mann, Garman, Jake Carrick (lead guitar/vocals), Darryl Arning (bass/vocals) and Stephen Borr (drums/vocals).

“My brother actually filled in for bass and guitar on two occasions during our changes so we could keep trucking, which we are very grateful,” Garman said.

And, according to Mann, it doesn’t look like anyone has a bucket of water big enough to douse their fire and passion for the music they play.

“We love playing in this band,” Mann said. “We have all worked real hard and sacrifice a lot to keep it together. I don’t think any of us would wanna let it die and have to start over. We will continue to drive this thing ’til the wheels fall off.”

Helping The Bombs’ cause is their no-nonsense brand of rock that has stayed in style as well as blue jeans have. The Hex Bombs bring listeners back to the good old days of punk before it was infiltrated by skinny jeans and eyeliner.

The Bombs have been transforming area venues into CBGBs with their Ramones-era sound.

“All walks of life, scenesters, the old and the young seem to enjoy what we do,” Garman said. “But, to say the style of music we play has anything to do with the reason we’ve progressed or lasted the test of time, is farthest from the truth. The truth is we’ve busted our asses over the last four years and we all have full-time jobs. We believe that the music we write and perform means something. We fight for every fan we have. We fight, because at this point in our lives, it’s the struggle that keeps us moving forward and gives us something to look forward to.”

The Hex Bombs will next be in action on March 4 at Mac’s Bar in Lansing opening up for Chicago punk rockers The Tossers, signed to Victory Records.
