NOISE! in the Enquirer: BC’s cheering for the Hometeam

Hometeam

NOISE! writer and resident sandwich expert (for realz) Joe Stando penned the latest column/artist spotlight for the Battle Creek Enquirer. This is a bi-weekly deal and by default makes the Enquirer the coolest newspaper in the Midwest.

Anyway, Joe touched base with Cereal City natives, Hometeam, who are now doing their thang out of Lansing. With a new EP out and opening for bands like The Swellers and The Wonder Years, the guys are doing all right for themselves and pop punk as a whole. What might even be more refreshing is their drive to support the music scene in addition to playing in it. You’ll have to read the article to catch it, so do it.

‘HOMETEAM’ HEROES GAINING STEAM
Sometimes, it takes a band a while to define its sound.

Many times, that is a conscious effort to try something new and different.

But for punk rockers Hometeam, who originated from Battle Creek, it’s doing what comes naturally.

“We’re just a bunch of punk rock kids,” said guitarist and frontman Tyler Damron, a Harper Creek graduate. “It’s what we grew up with, and it’s who we are.” [ READ STORY ]

Leilapalooza highlights Battle Creek’s diverse scene

Published by NOISE! Staff on July 11th, 2011 - in Concert Calendar, Featured

Battle Creek isn’t a one-trick musical pony, according to Paul Jones.

“It’s not so much that Battle Creek is centered around metal, as it is Battle Creek has one dedicated music venue in Planet Rock, focused on rock and metal, and they do a great job of promoting their shows,” said Jones. “There is also a large blues, jazz, punk, bluegrass and folk music scene in our area and this will be evident at our show.”

Anyone that needs concrete evidence to the fact can direct themselves to the Leila Arboretum on July 30 for the inaugural Leilapalooza, a show Jones is helping put together. The event is free to the public, featuring 32 bands from all over Michigan, merchants, a beer garden, food vendors and free admission to the Children’s Garden from 1 to 3 p.m.

The music kicks off at 11 a.m. with the Cereal City Concert Band and continues into the evening with bands like Gunship Radio, 8 Foot Grimiss, and Tobawah performing on three different stages. The Leila Arboretum Children’s Garden will be open from 1 to 3 p.m.

Admittance into the beer garden is $5 per person and includes three complimentary beverage tickets towards the purchase of a drink.

“One of our main focuses in selecting bands was to make sure we included different genres of music,” Jones said. “We wanted to create a musical buffet where everyone would be able to find something they could enjoy, and maybe enjoy something they wouldn’t usually listen to. Fortunately, Michigan is full of so many talented bands, finding musical acts was the easy part. And they are all donating their time in support of our local public museum and the beautiful Leila Arboretum that surrounds it.”

NOISE! appearing in the Battle Creek Enquirer beginning in July

Published by NOISE! Staff on June 21st, 2011 - in Uncategorized

For all those that have been having withdrawals from reading NOISE! on good ‘ol fashioned paper (known by ancient Egyptians as papyrus), this one is for you.

Starting in July, members of the NOISE! crew will be penning a bi-weekly local band spotlight/column for the Battle Creek Enquirer.

Needless to say, the Enquirer just became the raddest, baddest paper in the Mitten. The ball’s in your court Kalamazoo Gazette and Grand Rapids Press.

We’ll have plenty more details in the coming weeks and will alert everyone on what we’re running and when. In the meantime, music fans of Battle Creek, let us know what tickles your pickle these days (enjoy sentiments like these, they won’t be allowed in the newspaper).

Otep to appear at Planet Live Music Factory in Battle Creek Tuesday night

After hitting Club Envy in Muskegon last night, Otep looks to punch Michigan in the mouth one more night as they take stage at Planet Live Music Factory in Battle Creek on Tuesday night alongside Blackguard, Destrophy, Sister Sin and One Eyed Doll. The show, which kicks off at 7 p.m., costs $13.

The Los Angeles-based metal act built around outspoken front woman Otep Shamaya is toting their latest album “Atavist”, released on Victory Records back in late April. The latest work has been getting fair reviews from entertainment media outlets.

This is Otep’s second release on Victory after three prior releases on Capitol Records. Chart-wise, Otep’s prior release — “Smash the Control Machine” (2009)— was most popular.

Two members strong, King of the Forest moves ahead with album

Michelle Russell of Battle Creek's King of the Forest

And then there were two.

Battle Creek’s progressive rock band King of the Forest has now been whittled down to two of its founding members — Michelle Russell and Joe Klein — but the group is forging ahead to release a follow-up 2010′s release “Intensive”.

The band’s previous release was said to be a little more diverse, ushering pinches of funk and reggae, and this time around, King of the Forest is promising straight forward lyrics and songs that pull you in immediately.

With the last two standing musicians putting in most of the leg work on the forthcoming album, they’ll seek the aid from a number of guests in the local scene to flesh things out. With the lineup change and the prospect of what is to come upon the release, makes this album pretty appealing.
