NOISE! in the Enquirer: BC’s cheering for the Hometeam

Published by NOISE! Staff on August 18th, 2011 - in Featured, Other media

Hometeam

NOISE! writer and resident sandwich expert (for realz) Joe Stando penned the latest column/artist spotlight for the Battle Creek Enquirer. This is a bi-weekly deal and by default makes the Enquirer the coolest newspaper in the Midwest.

Anyway, Joe touched base with Cereal City natives, Hometeam, who are now doing their thang out of Lansing. With a new EP out and opening for bands like The Swellers and The Wonder Years, the guys are doing all right for themselves and pop punk as a whole. What might even be more refreshing is their drive to support the music scene in addition to playing in it. You’ll have to read the article to catch it, so do it.

‘HOMETEAM’ HEROES GAINING STEAM
Sometimes, it takes a band a while to define its sound.

Many times, that is a conscious effort to try something new and different.

But for punk rockers Hometeam, who originated from Battle Creek, it’s doing what comes naturally.

“We’re just a bunch of punk rock kids,” said guitarist and frontman Tyler Damron, a Harper Creek graduate. “It’s what we grew up with, and it’s who we are.” [ READ STORY ]

NOISE! in the Enquirer: Steel Wheels rolls through Marshall

Published by NOISE! Staff on August 4th, 2011 - in Other media

It’s yet another Thursday where the same rants and raves you see on wmnoisemag.com find their way to the pages of the Battle Creek Enquirer. As a part of a bi-weekly series, Jeremy Martin penned a nice article on our behalf previewing Virginia-based Steel Wheels’ unique tour done completely on bicycles. They’ll also be making a stop at Bell’s in Kalamazoo.

Get on over to the Enquirer’s web site or pick up a copy for the full story.

Steel Wheels is a Virginia band. It’s members — Trent Wagler, Jay Lapp, Brian Dickel and Eric Brubake — are proud to call Harrisburg their home and they identify with the region’s history and vast musical and cultural opportunities.

“I think there is a strong Virginia base that really sees us as being a Shenandoah Valley band,” said Wagler, the group’s guitarist. “I feel good about being rooted and that we have an identity that’s here in the valley. It’s strong for most of the members; Virginia has a lot of inspiration for us.” [ READ FULL STORY ]

NOISE! in the Enquirer: Trample the Weak is, well, trampling the weak

Published by NOISE! Staff on July 22nd, 2011 - in Other media

Trample the Weak

Start searching the floors of public bathrooms or alley ways in your local town for an old issue of the Battle Creek Enquirer. Thursday’s issue featured another one of our bi-weekly columns, penned by sir Jeremy Martin. This week we featured Trample the Weak, a hip-hop group hailing from The Creek that is working hard to make a name for itself.

Check out the full version over at the Enquirer’s web site, and make sure to grab a copy every other Thursday for whatever brilliance we have to spew.

=====

It has not been an easy road for Trample the Weak. Members of the Battle Creek hip-hop trio have spent the majority of their adult lives fighting against conformity and battling for acceptance from a city that has been slow to recognize their talents.

More than a decade of toil would have been enough to crush lesser artists, but the group comprised of rapper Eric “Beanzarelly” Thompson, producer Howard “Carnije” Weatherspoon and vocalist Shaun “Hot Sauce” Houseman, all Fennville High School graduates, have learned the hard way that everything comes with a price, especially stardom. NOISE! in the Enquirer: Folk punks Brown Cow preps for local show debut

Published by NOISE! Staff on July 7th, 2011 - in Band Features, Other media

Our first of a now bi-weekly column with the Battle Creek Enquirer ran in today’s paper. Battle Freaks, get to your nearest gas station or grocery store and pick up a copy.

NOISE! contributor Jeremy Martin — who, let’s face it, does a whole lot more than just write for us (but we like to claim him as one of our own) — penned the inaugural column on Brown Cow. These folk punk rockers, headed up by Mallory Cobb, have been around for a while, but are just now prepping for their first show in Battle Creek. But, they’ve been busy playing plenty in Kalamazoo and recording an album.

BROWN COW: A BAND BY ACCIDENT
Whether taking their name from a misprinted show flier or randomly finding its young drummer in a basement, it would seem that the majority of what Battle Creek’s Brown Cow does is simply by happy accident.

“I read a lot of books on Kurt Cobain. …He was in a band at one point called Brown Towel, but they misspelled it on one of the show flyers and put Brown Cow, so I just stole it I guess,” the group’s guitarist and songwriter Mallory Cobb said on how the band’s name came to be. NOISE! appearing in the Battle Creek Enquirer beginning in July

Published by NOISE! Staff on June 21st, 2011 - in Uncategorized

For all those that have been having withdrawals from reading NOISE! on good ‘ol fashioned paper (known by ancient Egyptians as papyrus), this one is for you.

Starting in July, members of the NOISE! crew will be penning a bi-weekly local band spotlight/column for the Battle Creek Enquirer.

Needless to say, the Enquirer just became the raddest, baddest paper in the Mitten. The ball’s in your court Kalamazoo Gazette and Grand Rapids Press.

We’ll have plenty more details in the coming weeks and will alert everyone on what we’re running and when. In the meantime, music fans of Battle Creek, let us know what tickles your pickle these days (enjoy sentiments like these, they won’t be allowed in the newspaper).
