Brian Edwards of Revue Magazine says the NOISE! Convention is worth seeing…so maybe you should go and check it out

News from people that make steady paychecks, thus are more credible than we are: Jeremy Cronk, Saxsquatch and Old Dog Tavern
With some holiday time off, I had the chance to lean back, kick my feet up and read some good ‘ol fashioned newspaper. Not even on an iPad or Kindle. We’re talking paper and ink for realzies.
Open mic: Do what you want on stage at Old Dog Tavern
You can do what you like on the Old Dog Tavern stage for its Tuesday open-mic nights.
“As long as it’s within the law,” said Branden Mann, who co-host with Tom Ufkes.
They have been hosting the Old Dog’s open-mic nights for the past two months. The two — leader and drummer of Branden Mann and The Reprimand — keep the atmosphere accepting but orderly.
The Strutt show: Kalamazoo’s ‘Saxsquatch’ is sax with a soul
In the frigid entertainment wasteland between Christmas and New Year’s, very little is stirring.
But what’s that? Could it be, straying from his claymation “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” world to hold a funk/jazz jam session, the Abominable Snowman with a sax?
“I’ve been compared to him, too,”
said.
He’s big, hairy, “About six-and-a-half feet tall, about 375 pounds.” And he plays sax.
Catch Jeremy Cronk at The Strutt to complete the holidays
It’s the day after Christmas, three days since the feats of strength have put Festivus to rest and more than two weeks since Hanukkah has come to a roaring close. What more is there to do, celebrate and buy before the pink hearts and roses of St. Valentine envelope the world in a force-field of love and chocolate?
Jeremy Cronk has a suggestion. On Sunday, The local songsmith will be releasing his debut album at The Strutt and he highly recommends you shake off your holiday coma and get yourself geared up for a pleasant evening of neo-psychedelic, urban folk music. And he wouldn’t mind one bit if you purchased his record while you were out.

Revue's Lindsay Patton-Carson on local music, Billy Idol and street fights
By Munson Haver
NOISE! Editor
They spend their work days asking the questions and doing the writing. But not today. We wanted to grill some of the bright minds of local entertainment journalism and find out a little bit about them as people. Today, we kidnapped Lindsay Patton-Carson from her music editor duties at Revue Magazine to ask her the hard questions.
Make sure to stalk Mrs. Patton-Carson at twitter.com/lindsaypatton. She also likes when strangers peek in her windows after 11pm.
KN!: Essentially your job is to be a local music guru. Do you consider yourself one, and would you be able to back it up via a written or verbal quiz?
LPC: Oh hell no. I would probably fail both a written and verbal quiz. The truth is, the term “local,” at least to Revue, includes Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Battle Creek and the lakeshore. That’s a lot of local music. It would be a bit pompous of me to say I was a guru, but I try my best to keep up on the local music news and events.
KN!: What are some national acts that you got a huge thrill out of interviewing?
LPC: There have been quite a few, but there were two in particular where the “fan” part of me took over. Those were Ani DiFranco and Andrew Bird. Ani was exactly how I expected her to be, which made it even better. Also, meeting Eddie Money was pretty epic. He reminded me of your typical creepy uncle. He also may have been smoking a choice substance in his tour bus.
KN!: How does Kalamazoo’s scene differ from the one in Grand Rapids?
LPC: I’ve noticed, for the most part, Kalamazoo’s scene is more edgy and rock-influenced. Grand Rapids has more of the lo-fi, experimental indie bands.
KN!: Discussion on music can get a heated, do you get a lot of angry e-mails?
LPC: Surprisingly, not a lot at all. I can’t please everyone, and not every entertainer is going to get a cover story, but thankfully, a lot of entertainers realize that any little bit of promotion can go a long way. Because of that, I try to push our listings calendar for show dates. It’s free publicity and now you can manually enter your dates on our website instead of spamming me every month. Just kidding. I love your spam.
KN!: Does it bug you that NOISE! is superior to Revue?
LPC: Of course. I go home every night to a bottle of wine and drown in the puddle of tears that accumulates on my pillow because Revue just can’t compete.
KN!: Word on the streets is you’re obsessed with Billy Idol? What’s the draw? Is it his rebel yell?
LPC: Not as much as I love David Bowie. Actually, a lot of people get those two confused and it makes my blood boil. But yes, I do love the Idol. I saw him in concert a few years ago and in between songs he goes — in his rebel yell — “I’m fuckin’ Billy Idol!” Only Billy Idol could get away with that.
KN!: Any cool things on the horizon at Revue that have you pumped?
LPC: Yes, I am extremely excited about June’s issue. But you have to wait and see. Shhh.
KN!: Who would win in a street fight – Munson Haver or Lindsay Patton-Carson?
LPC: This is a tough one. Haver has five pounds on me, so that’s a disadvantage. However, depending on when I need to recharge my mobile device, I hold the power of television in my hands. On the mobile device-carrying days, I would distract him with Saved by the Bell reruns. Any other time, I would be effed.
KN!: Why does MTV and corporate radio suck?
LPC: Pregnant teenagers and Nickelback.

It must be shameful-self-promotion Thursday
Well, maybe not, because this isn’t all about us. But, a cool online magazine called Southwest Michigan’s Second Wave ran a story about the past, present and future of the Kalamazoo music scene. It’s definitely a must-read simply because Rebecca Bakken talks to so many knowledgeable people…and also us.
They also give significant acknowledgement to the upcoming NOISE! Convention while risking a lull in traffic by including a photo spread of us. So you have been warned.
